Utopia, letter from Jacky

Jacky Lubeck, American by birth and Jan Willemsen, Dutch, run a Theatre Group in Palestine. I have known them for years now. They work together with Palestinian actors, soemtimes young kids, acting for the first time in their lives, and always the themes are about Palestinian life, life under occupation.
We do not meet often, because somhow when I’m in Gaza, they are in Hebron, and when I’m in Jerusalem, they are in Gaza, but we keep in touch.
The pictures I show I made in Hebron, years ago, when I was watching rehearsals.

This is a letter from Jacky:

Friends, Colleagues, Partners
It’s a mess. Gaza is closed to us. Hebron is barricaded. But we are
still able to work… Some kids are on emergency school schedules but
all are eager to have their Theatre Day and we are there. Attached is
the announcement of the new play in Hebron ironically titled “The
Utopians.” It’s a splash of colour and music from the heart and soul
mixed into today’s reality.
We also want to let you know that the house of TDP trainee Mahmoud Oudeh
was detroyed last Thursday night. Mahmoud, his wife, and their 4 kids
are now living with other family members. They lost the whole house,
their car, and all their pocessions. IDF forces occupied the house next
to Mahmoud’s and “didn’t want any neighbours”. He was in his slippers
and pajamas when they told him, “Say bye bye to your house.”
Utopia?
We are trying.
Jan, Jackie, Amer
