Message from South Africa: We fought apartheid; we see no
reason to celebrate it in Israel now!
We, South Africans who faced the might of unjust and brutal apartheid
machinery in South Africa and fought against it with all our strength,
with the objective to live in a just, democratic society, refuse today
to celebrate the existence of an Apartheid state in the Middle East.
While Israel and its apologists around the world will, with pomp and
ceremony, loudly proclaim the 60th anniversary of the establishment of
the state of Israel this month, we who have lived with and struggled
against oppression and colonialism will, instead, remember 6 decades of
catastrophe for the Palestinian people. 60 years ago, 750,000
Palestinians were brutally expelled from their homeland, suffering
persecution, massacres, and torture. They and their descendants remain
refugees. This is no reason to celebrate.
When we think of the Sharpeville massacre of 1960,
we also remember the Deir Yassin massacre of 1948.
When we think of South Africa’s Bantustan policy,
we remember the bantustanisation of Palestine by the Israelis.
When we think of our heroes who languished on Robben Island and
elsewhere,
we remember the 11,000 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails.
When we think of the massive land theft perpetrated against the people
of South Africa,
we remember that the theft of Palestinian land continues with the
building of illegal Israeli settlements and the Apartheid Wall.
When we think of the Group Areas Act and other such apartheid
legislation,
we remember that 93% of the land in Israel is reserved for Jewish use
only.
When we think of Black people being systematically dispossessed in
South Africa,
we remember that Israel uses ethnic and racial dispossession to strike
at the heart of Palestinian life.
When we think of how the SADF troops persecuted our people in the
townships,
we remember that attacks from tanks, fighter jets and helicopter
gunships are the daily experience of Palestinians in the Occupied
Territory.
When we think of the SADF attacks against our neighbouring states,
we remember that Israel deliberately destabilises the Middle East
region and threatens international peace and security, including with
its 100s of nuclear warheads.
We who have fought against Apartheid and vowed not to allow it to
happen again can not allow Israel to continue perpetrating apartheid,
colonialism and occupation against the indigenous people of Palestine.
We dare not allow Israel to continue violating international law with
impunity.
We will not stand by while Israel continues to starve and bomb the
people of Gaza.
We who fought all our lives for South Africa to be a state for all its
people demand that millions of Palestinian refugees must be accorded
the right to return to the homes from where they were expelled.
Apartheid was a gross violation of human rights. It was so in South
Africa and it is so with regard to Israel’s persecution of the
Palestinians!

Waarom staat dit dan niet in de Volkskrant?
Omdat ze het leuker vinden om zo’n kutstuk van Steyn te publiceren, Marrigje, en dat bedoel ik nou. Ze kiezen. En je mag ze op hun keuze aanspreken.
De (volks)krant die weer eens de kant van de Macht kiest.
Rutger Santing deed het omgekeerde en werd op een zijspoor gezet.
De leiders in Zuid Afrika hebben net als de andere Afrikaanse leiders Mugabe eerst gesteund en vervolgens niets gedaan tegen de terreur die hij tegen zijn eigen volk heeft uitgeoefend.Heeft u gezien welke afschuwelijke gevolgen dat heeft voor de vluchtelingen uit Zimbabwe in Zuid Afrika.Als men het in Zuid Afrika over mensenrechten en onderdrukking heeft moet men eens naar die afschuwelijke beelden kijken die gisteren op het NOS journaal te zien waren.Men hoeft in Zuid Afrika niet te verwijzen naar de afschuwelijke periode van de apartheid om dit te vergelijkingen met Israël waar alle bevolkingsgroepen democratische rechten hebben.Dit slaat nergens op en in verband met de huidige situatie in Zuid Afrika en Zimbabwe lijkt mij dit
iets waarmee men zichzelf voor schut zet.
Dat ga ik dan maar eens doen.
Journalistiek zou het beter zijn als ze beiden stukken plaatsen en geen keuze maken. Tenslotte is de krant er om te informeren heb ik altijd begrepen, zodat de burger, goed geinformeerd, zijn/haar eigen keuze kan maken.
Zuid Afrika was eens een apartheidsstaat, met een blanke koloniale overheersing over de zwarte bevolking, David. En wat Israel doet en is lijkt daar verdacht veel op. En dat is een schande.
Wat jij nu doet is problemen die sindsdien zijn ontstaan gebruiken om Zuid Afrika helemaal weg te zetten, en het doel is duidelijk: het schoonwassen van Israel. Feitelijk dus: het verdedigen van apartheid.
Dat probeerde je ook weer op een andere plek op mijn weblog. Ik heb al gezegd: doe geen moeite om steeds maar weer hetzelfde al zo vaak weerlegde verhaal over de onschuldige Israeli’s en die nare Arabieren hier neer te zetten. We kennen het al. Zie het dossier: de zionistische canon. Hier. Dat is gewoon weer eens paradigma 1, Israel heeft nergens schuld aan en moet zich alleen maar verdedigen tegen de Arabische vijand, en die hebben we uit.
Ik zet niets weg.De apartheid was verwerpelijk en afschuwelijk.
Alleen de leiders in Afrika durven elkaar niet af te vallen waardoor grote humanitaire problemen ontstaan en misdaden worden gepleegd.Ga je vanuit die situatie een andere staat van apartheid beschuldigen dan zie je de balk in je eigen oog niet.
Het probleem is dat iedereen die enigszins de kant van Israël objectief belicht wordt uitgemaakt voor iemand die de apartheid wil goedpraten of aanhanger is van de PVV.
Dan wordt het tijd dat jij eindelijk eens objectief gaat kijken en de apartheid in Israel veroordeelt, David. Gezien de balk in jouw eigen oog. Maar dat doe je niet.
Ik maak alleen aanhangers van de PVV uit voor aanhangers van de PVV.
En die staan inderdaad blind achter Israel.
Waar jij op stemt kan ik niet weten.
Waar blijven de vergelijkingen met de kristalnacht?
Als je een beetje hebt opgelet dan weet je dat ik alleen vergelijkingen maak die ik waar kan maken, Wilfred. Zoals de vergelijking met apartheid.
Als je iets wilt weten over pogroms kun je googelen op settler violence. Maar dat wil je vast niet weten want jij bent nu opnieuw bezig om de aandacht af te leiden van waar we het over hebben: de apartheid in Israel. Inderdaad, er gebeuren op dit moment erge dingen in Zuid Afrika, en het is terecht dat we ons daar druk over maken. Dat doet alleen helemaal niets af aan het feit dat Israel een apartheidsstaat is geworden, zoals ik mij als ik steel nooit kan beroepen op het feit dat mijn buurman een dief is.
Ik heb dus de volkskrant gevraagd naar het waarom van hun keuzes, en hen gewezen op andere geluiden met links naar de oorspronkelijke artikelen.
Krijg ik zojuist als antwoord terug, dat er genoeg andere geluiden zijn te horen, op radio en tv, en internet, en dat de Volkskrant daarom dit artikel van Steyn geplaatst heeft, want dat gaf goed de andere kant weer. Letterlijk : ‘Daarom dachten wij dat de andere kant van het verhaal ook wel eens
belicht mag worden’
Gelukkig mogen wij in Nederland zaken van meer kanten bekijken.Dat mag in Israël ook.Maar mag het ook in de Palestijnse gebieden?En hoe staat het met de persvrijheid in de landen die aan Israël grenzen? Marrigje vindt het toch niet jammer dat er persvrijheid is in Nederland?
En ik maak alleen vergelijkingen die feitelijk kloppen.
Het hoort bij het vaste programma van de Israel-verdedigers zoals jij om te zoeken naar zaken die het vijandbeeld versterken (die slechte Arabieren) en het eigen beeld schoonwassen (onschuldig Israel).
Inderdaad, in het Midden Oosten zijn nog veel landen die het proces tot aan een werkelijke democratie met persvrijheid nog niet voltooid hebben, ook al wil het merendeel van de bevolking dat wel. Maar om nou net prat te gaan op de persvrijheid in Israel op het moment dat Norman Finkelstein Israel niet meer in mag omdat zijn kijk op dat land de regering niet erg bevalt is wat je noemt een gotspe, David.
En het punt waar het hier over gaat kwam ook niet zo erg bij je door: dat er hier een grote mate van persvrijheid is betekent niet dat je een krant niet aan kunt spreken op hun keuze. Integendeel, ook dat hoort bij die persvrijheid. En ik vind dat een krant er verantwoordelijk voor is als ze aantoonbare leugens verspreiden, ook als dat in de vorm van een opiniestuk gaat.
