Bound, Blindfolded and Convicted
Diewertje Blok will host the human rights lawyer Gerard Horton from Defence for Children International. He will talk about the findings of a new report published by DCI and the continued use of solitary confinement in the Israeli military detention system
Tuesday 29th May 20:00 De Balie Amsterdam, (Kleine Gartmanplantsoen 10).
The evening will start with the screening of the short documentary film ‘Stolen Children, Stolen Lives’ (Gerry O’Sullivan, 2011).
The new report – Bound, Blindfolded and Convicted: Children held in military detention – is the culmination of four year’s work by DCI, with the support of the European Union, focusing on verifying allegations of ill-treatment and torture of children in the Israeli military detention system. The findings of the report are based on 311 sworn affidavits taken from children between January 2008 and January 2012. The report found that there is a systematic pattern of ill-treatment of children held in the military detention system, with the majority of the abuse occurring during the first 48 hours. The talk will also focus on the continued use of solitary confinement in the military detention system as an interrogation technique in spite of demands by a number of UN agencies calling for a complete prohibition on this practice in the case of children.
A limited amount of copies of the report will be available during the evening.
This public meeting is organized by: gate48, platform for critical Israeli in the Netherlands, Different Jewish Voice, Defence for Children International the Netherlands and Palestine Link, in cooperation with De Balie and United Civilians for Peace.
