Oproep van Ramadan

Dear friends,

Right now a tragedy is unfolding in the Middle East. Hundreds of civilians have died in the bombings in Lebanon, Israel and Palestine and the death toll is rising every day.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called for an immediate ceasefire and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has joined Annan in calling for the deployment of international troops to the Israel-Lebanon border. This is the best proposal yet to stop the violence, but for it to succeed other global leaders need to get behind it immediately.

I have just signed a petition urging regional and global leaders to speak out and support Kofi Annan’s proposal. If people around the world can persuade their governments to unite in demanding a ceasefire, all sides in this conflict will be pressured to stand down. Can you sign the petition too?

The petition will be sent to key regional and global leaders and publicized in major newspapers in the Middle East, US and Europe. With enough signatures we can help pressure our leaders to stop the violence.

Thanks!

Ramadan Hussein

  1. Thank you, Ramadan. The campaign was on my weblog already, and many people signed, but I’m glad to repeat it again, and now with your recomendation. For some people it might make a difference that is is recomended by a Palestinian friend living in Gaza.

  2. Within a few days I received the ceasefirecampaign from friends in Australia, Denmark and USA. That’s a hopeful signal! (But on the other hand one would expect more signatures by now).

    Ramadan, how is the situation in Gaza?

  3. Hi Everyone;

    Thank you very much for giving me this nice feeling of being there with us. Actually, it makes a big difference for us when the number of signing people is increasing, which means that the awareness of the people is increasing too.

    About the situation in Gaza, it is really still the same, but Israel is now more busy in Lebanon, their army and airforce is not attacking Gaza as much as before. The big problem is that schools are starting in a few days and everyone is trying to prepare for the newyear for their children. Practically it is fine, but on the ground it is really the most difficult time for all parents due to the closure and the lack of salary payment. Imagine also how difficult is it to start school with no electricity, yes we got used to having no electricity, because it is summer vacation, but how will students manage when its school time. Further, people are not thinking of peace now, people are thinking in living their days. Actually I like many other Palestinians if not all have a strange feeling that I can not describe. I am tired, sleepy and feel sick every moment. It might be burnout, but what shall we do to get rid of it if we dont have a place to spend our vacation in. You should know that we can\’t go to the beach because of the Israeli battle ships that are surrounding Gaza.

    With love to you all
    Ramadan
