A Palestinian friend who is a senior official in the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah spoke with me this morning. Usually optimistic and positive, this morning she said to me “We lost it all; it is just a matter of time before the West Bank turns into Gaza”. That is the overall mood and sense of reality held by most Palestinians today. Over the past month I have participated in international conferences with senior Palestinian leaders at the European Parliament, in a regional meeting in Athens, in several Israeli-Palestinian Track II meetings held in Israel – all of the Palestinian participants, officials and non-officials voiced expressions of pessimism and despair. The same message can be heard on the grass-roots as well throughout the West Bank and even East Jerusalem.

They suffer under a catastrophic and brutal siege. My friends live in a surreal world where Israel, the powerful bully, is as violent as it wants to be without consequences from its financiers in the US or Europe.

Nablus
In het NRC verscheen gisteravond een artikel over de acties van het Israelische leger in Nablus. Het dringt ook in Nederland (een beetje) door. Hieronder een artikel van Peter Hirschberg, op Electronic Intifada. In nog wat andere woorden herhaalt hij wat Gideon Levy (vertaalde artikel van gisteren) al zei. Maar Hirschberg plaatst het meer in de context van de achterliggende kwesties: Israel wil voorkomen dat Hamas ook de overhand krijgt op de Westoever. Dat zouden ze kunnen doen door Abbas/Fatah te versterken, bijvoorbeeld door werkelijk enige stappen in de richting van de Palestijnen te zetten, door de nederzettingenbouw tenminste te bevriezen (waren ze volgens de afspraken verplicht, doen ze niet), het aantal checkpoints en blokkades te verminderen (was al beloofd, doen ze ook niet), en eindelijk eens serieus aan de tafel gaan zitten voor de onderhandelingen – ze kijken wel uit. Een handje schudden bij een photo-op is het maximum wat er af kan.

Hier is het nieuwste van het nieuwste in de oorlog tegen het terrorisme: de oorlog tegen kappers. Nadat Hamas de leiding nam over de helft van het Palestijnse volk, niet in de laatste plaats vanwege de politiek van Israel; nadat we Hamas probeerden te verslaan met wapens en een blokkade, verwoesting en liquidaties, massa-arrestaties en deportaties, hebben het Israelische leger en de veiligheidsdienst Shin Beth wat nieuws verzonnen: een oorlog tegen winkelcentra, bakkerijen, scholen en weeshuizen. Eerst in Hebron, nu ook in Nablus. Het leger sluit schoonheidssalons, klerenwinkels, en klinieken, en zelfs een zuivelbedrijf, allemaal met de smoes dat ze verbonden zouden zijn met Hamas, of dat de huur die ze betalen naar een terroristische organisatie gaat.

‘Worse than apartheid’
I thought they would feel right at home in the alleys of Balata refugee camp, the Casbah and the Hawara checkpoint. But they said there is no comparison: for them the Israeli occupation regime is worse than anything they knew under apartheid. This week, 21 human rights activists from South Africa visited Israel. Among them were members of Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress; at least one of them took part in the armed struggle and at least two were jailed. There were two South African Supreme Court judges, a former deputy minister, members of Parliament, attorneys, writers and journalists. Blacks and whites, about half of them Jews who today are in conflict with attitudes of the conservative Jewish community in their country. Some of them have been here before; for others it was their first visit.
