Jara zegt tegen Mary dat ze haar haar blond moet verven. Dan heeft ze minder problemen om door de checkpoint te komen. Nee, ik ben Palestijn en dat blijf ik, zegt Mary. To exist is to resist, schiet door mijn hoofd. Dat is een slogan die hier steeds vaker wordt gebruikt.

Letter from Trees to our friends in Gaza

I write this message in English because I want our friends from Gaza to read it too. As some of you know, I live in Sakhnin, a Palestinian village in the Galilee. People here are so frustrated because they feel that they can not do anything to support the people of Gaza. But since three weeks, before this latest blockade began, in the villages around Sakhnin, Araba, Deir Hanna etc. a big campaign started to collect goods for the people of Gaza.

Here we have the yardstick for security success: the number of Palestinians killed. As in the most primeval wars, the heads of the defense establishment are boasting about the number of people Israel has killed. Their job is to ensure protection for the residents of the state. And, as we know, the residents of the “Gaza perimeter” are not receiving this protection. So the death toll has become the measure of their success.
