Afgelopen week moest ik denken aan een oud verhaal van een joodse moeder die afscheid neemt van haar zoon, die opgeroepen is om in het leger van de Tsaar tegen de Turken te vechten. “Vermoei je niet te veel” geeft ze hem als goede raad, mee, “je schiet een Turk dood, en dan ga je even zitten, en dan schiet je de volgende Turk dood en dan rust je weer een beetje uit..”
“Maar moeder”, zegt hij, “wat als die Turk mij doodschiet?”
“Jou doodschieten?”, roept de moeder uit, “Hoezo, je hebt hem toch niks gedaan?”

The escalation in and around the Gaza Strip is causing terrible suffering to people – to men, women, elderly and children, Palestinian as well as Israeli civilians. The military offensive conducted by the Israeli armed forces has so far caused hundreds of Palestinian casualties; many of them were unarmed civilians. The siege and economic blockade have reduced most of the Gaza Strip’s population to abject poverty, devastated its economy, and caused the death of critically ill patients, denied access to vital treatment. The Palestinian attacks on Sderot have severely traumatized its population, far beyond the physical casualties caused among them.

I WAS reminded this week of the old tale about a Jewish mother taking leave of her son, who has been called up to serve in the Czar’s army against the Turks.

“Don’t exert yourself too much,” she admonishes him, “Kill a Turk and rest. Kill another Turk and rest again…”

Zoals wel eerder gezegd: ik ben het niet altijd met Uri Avnery eens, de oude veteraan die als jongen nog in de Irgun zat, een van de zionistische ondergrondse groepen – ik was een terrorist, zegt hij zelf – en zich geevolueerd heeft tot een van de scherpste critici van het huidige Israelische regime. Al in de tachtig is hij nog steeds een onvermoeibaar activist, pas stond hij nog vooraan bij de voedseltocht naar Gaza, stop the siege, en ook was hij altijd de eerste die met de Palestijnen ging praten, ook toen dat nog verboden was en neerkwam op landverraad. Zo zegt hij nu ook al een hele tijd dat er wel met Hamas gepraat moet worden. Ook als je het soms met hem oneens kan zijn, het blijft altijd de moeite waard wat hij zegt.

A WISE person once said: “A fool learns from his experience. An intelligent person learns from the experience of others.” To which one could add: “And an idiot does not even learn from his own experience.”
So what can we learn from a book which shows that we do not learn from experience?
All this is building up to a recommendation for such a book. I don’t recommend books as a rule, not even my own. But this time I feel the need to make an exception.
